MCP, the protocol that's changing Shopify

In thirteen months, the Model Context Protocol has become the infrastructure layer that ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini use to query Shopify stores. Here's what that means for your business in 2026.

Understanding the Model Context Protocol with Stellar, the Shopify and AI agency

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that standardizes how AIs connect to business data and tools. Shopify integrated it at the core of its infrastructure between 2025 and 2026, redefining the customer journey. This article explains what MCP is, how Shopify deployed it, and what it concretely changes for your store in 2026.

You will see: what MCP is technically, why it is becoming the standard for agentic commerce, the timeline of its adoption by Shopify, the two official MCP servers offered by Shopify, concrete uses for merchants, and a quick comparison with the related ACP and UCP protocols.

The MCPs: AI revolution for all e-merchants.

What exactly is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source protocol that defines a standard way for AI models to connect to data sources and external tools. Anthropic announced it in November 2024, then handed the MCP protocol over to the Agentic AI Foundation, a dedicated fund under the Linux Foundation, to make it a true industry standard.

The most telling analogy is USB for AI. Before MCP, every integration between an LLM and a business tool required a custom, fragile connector that was difficult to maintain. With MCP, a single standardized protocol allows any compatible client (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, etc.) to query any compatible server (your Shopify store, your CRM, your database, your wiki).

The protocol is based on three primitives:

  • Tools: Actions the AI can trigger (e.g., search for a product, add to cart, create a draft).
  • Resources: Structured data the AI can read (product catalog, return policies, FAQ).
  • Prompts: Reusable conversation templates that the server can expose to guide the AI.

The architecture is client/server, using JSON-RPC transport. The MCP client is the application hosting the model (your agent, your chatbot). The MCP server is the endpoint that exposes your tools and data. Between the two, a standardized dialogue takes place.

The official 2025-11-25 specification marked a turning point: it introduced asynchronous operations, statelessness (stateless servers for scaling), server identity, and an official framework for extensions. In other words, MCP evolved from a conversational protocol to a production-ready infrastructure.

Criterion Classic REST API MCP
AI Integration Custom connector Open standard
Tool Discovery External documentation Self-declared by server
Maintenance by AI Client One per LLM/API pair One, shared
Governance Proprietary Open source, Linux Foundation

Why MCP is a game-changer for e-commerce

The answer is simple: before MCP, an AI agent capable of purchasing from your store did not exist in production. With MCP, it has become the default experience.

Specifically, when a customer asks ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for a product recommendation, the LLM no longer just generates a vague response from its training data. It queries an MCP server in real-time, which returns real, available, up-to-date products, along with their prices and stock levels. The customer can compare, add to cart, and finalize the order without ever leaving the conversation. This is conversational commerce at scale.

McKinsey projects 3 to 5 trillion dollars in orchestrated agentic commerce by 2030. The US B2C market alone could reach 1 trillion. These are magnitudes you cannot ignore if you operate a store today.

For a Shopify merchant, the challenge is no longer "making their site visible on Google." It's about making their catalog readable and purchasable by all AI agents, wherever a purchase conversation is initiated. MCP is the infrastructure layer that makes this possible.

Shopify's adoption of MCP: A timeline

Shopify didn't wait to align with the standard. Here is the factual timeline, sourced from official announcements.

  • November 25, 2024: Anthropic publishes MCP and open-sources it.
  • Summer '25 Edition: Shopify introduces the Storefront MCP, the first official MCP endpoint on the platform.
  • November 25, 2025: Major MCP spec (async, stateless, server identity, extensions).
  • Winter '26 Edition, December 2025: Shopify launches the Dev MCP Server, native Hydrogen support on Oxygen.
  • March 24, 2026: Agentic Storefronts activated by default. 5.6 million Shopify stores automatically become discoverable in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini.
  • April 9, 2026: Shopify open-sources its AI Toolkit, the developer wrapper for Dev MCP.

Tobi Lütke, Shopify's CEO, summed it up bluntly: "Shopify is building the foundation for agentic commerce." In other words, the goal is no longer for you to receive traffic to your store, but for your store to be present, in structured data, in all purchase conversations that occur elsewhere.

To understand the scope of these announcements, the article Winter '26, how Shopify is revolutionizing AI commerce details the product implications for merchants.

Shopify's official MCP servers

Shopify currently exposes three official MCP servers, each with its own role. They are documented at shopify.dev/docs/apps/build/storefront-mcp.

Storefront MCP server

This is the central server for conversational commerce. Each store has its own endpoint, accessible at https://{shop}.myshopify.com/api/mcp. It exposes the tools an agent needs to help a customer make a purchase: catalog search, cart management, reading store policies.

Here is an official example of a JSON-RPC call to the search_catalog tool, which implements the catalog capability of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP):

{
  "jsonrpc": "2.0",
  "method": "tools/call",
  "id": 1,
  "params": {
    "name": "search_catalog",
    "arguments": {
      "meta": {
        "ucp-agent": {
          "profile": "https://shopify.dev/ucp/agent-profiles/examples/2026-04-08/valid-with-capabilities.json"
        }
      },
      "catalog": {
        "query": "organic coffee beans",
        "context": {
          "address_country": "US",
          "intent": "Customer prefers fair trade products"
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

Five tools are currently exposed: search_catalog, lookup_catalog, get_product, get_cart, update_cart, plus search_shop_policies_and_faqs. This is sufficient for an agent to manage a complete purchase journey, from the first prompt to checkout.

Customer Accounts MCP server

This second server exposes what happens after the purchase: order tracking, return management, access to customer account information. It's the after-sales service counterpart of agentic commerce. A customer can ask their assistant "where is my order" and get a real-time response, without calling anyone.

Shopify Dev MCP (AI Toolkit)

This one is not for buyers, but for developers. It connects IDEs and code agents (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, OpenAI Codex) directly to Shopify documentation, GraphQL schemas, and Admin API operations. Seven tools are integrated: documentation search, query validation, execution of store operations, schema introspection.

Installation on Claude Code is done in two commands:

/plugin marketplace add Shopify/shopify-ai-toolkit
/plugin install shopify-plugin@shopify-ai-toolkit

For Cursor, the addition is made in Settings, then Tools and MCP, then New MCP server. Shopify development productivity increases significantly, as the agent validates its own GraphQL queries before suggesting them to you. The Shopify AI Toolkit is now open source and maintained directly by the Shopify teams.

Setting up these MCP servers and connecting them to your systems requires development. This is precisely the business of our Shopify AI Studio, which builds custom tools for Shopify merchants.

What MCP concretely changes for your Shopify store

Beyond the technical layer, what matters is what you need to do in 2026. Here are the five levers to activate.

  1. Verify your eligibility for Agentic Storefronts. Since March 24, 2026, activation is default for eligible stores. Check in your Shopify admin that the feature is active and your catalog is exposed.
  2. Restructure your product pages for agent readability. Titles must be clear, attributes structured, variants explicitly named. An agent doesn't guess, it reads what is exposed. The guide Shopify product page best practices details the preferred structures.
  3. Audit your store policies. Shipping, returns, terms of sale: these pages are read by search_shop_policies_and_faqs. If they are unclear, the agent will respond incorrectly, and you will lose the sale. Craft each sentence as if it were your salesperson.
  4. Activate Dev MCP internally if you develop. Whether you are in an internal team or with an agency, the AI Toolkit accelerates Shopify development by a real factor. It's a zero-cost investment for an immediate gain in velocity.
  5. Monitor your new attribution channels. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot now send traffic and sales. You need to track them as you tracked Google and Meta. If you don't measure, you can't optimize.

To go further on the strategic dimension, the page create a Shopify store with AI covers complementary tools (Shopify Magic, Sidekick, LLM integrations), the page on AI and e-commerce provides the overall strategic framework, and the guide GEO tools for Shopify covers the 8 visibility levers in LLMs.

MCP, ACP, UCP: How to navigate them

Three acronyms are circulating in parallel. The confusion is understandable. Here's the map:

Protocol Creator Layer Status
MCP (Model Context Protocol) Anthropic, donated to the Linux Foundation LLM to tool and data connection Standard, in production
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) Shopify and Google, co-developed Catalog and transaction interoperability Implemented in Storefront MCP
ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) Emergent, several players Agent to merchant transactions Stabilizing

In practice, for a Shopify merchant, the essential takeaway is simple. MCP is the channel. UCP is the language of your catalog. ACP is the semantics of transactions. Shopify has already wired the first two via Storefront MCP. The third is coming.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol is an open-source protocol created by Anthropic in November 2024. It standardizes how AI models connect to data sources and external tools. It is now managed by the Agentic AI Foundation, under the Linux Foundation.

How does the Model Context Protocol work?

MCP is based on a client/server architecture using JSON-RPC transport. The client is the application hosting the model (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor). The server exposes three primitives: tools (actions), resources (data), and prompts (conversation templates). The client queries the server in real time to obtain context and capabilities.

What is the difference between MCP and RAG?

A RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) searches a vector database to enrich a prompt. MCP directly calls structured tools and data in real time, with possible actions (mutations, transactions). MCP covers use cases that RAG cannot address, such as adding to a cart or creating an order.

Which MCP servers does Shopify offer?

Shopify exposes three official servers: the Storefront MCP (catalog, cart, policies), the Customer Accounts MCP (orders, returns, customer account), and the Shopify Dev MCP via the AI Toolkit (documentation, GraphQL, Admin operations) for developers.

How do I activate MCP on my Shopify store?

For Agentic Storefronts (visibility in ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Google AI Mode), activation is by default since March 24, 2026, for eligible stores. For Dev MCP, install the AI Toolkit via the Claude Code plugin marketplace or Cursor's MCP settings.

Which LLMs support MCP in 2026?

Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, VS Code, and any client implementing the MCP specification. Adoption has been almost unanimous in thirteen months, making it the de facto standard.

Is MCP secure for an e-commerce site?

Yes, provided best practices are followed. The November 2025 specification introduced server identity, scope-based access control, and more robust asynchronous operations. For a Shopify store, security is provided by Shopify on the server side, but your app policies and scopes remain your responsibility.

Go further with the STELLAR Method

MCP is no longer a lab subject. It's an infrastructure activated by default on 5.6 million Shopify stores, and major LLMs are already consuming it. Merchants who take the time to understand, audit, and align their store with these standards will gain a significant head start in the next twelve months.

This is exactly what the letter L for Leverage covers in the STELLAR Method: amplify the brand with the right tools and AI, without sacrificing any of its consistency. MCP is an infrastructure lever. It's up to you to use it as a brand lever.

MCP is just one piece of a larger movement. For the bigger picture, read our guide on agentic commerce.
