Create product variants on Shopify
To create product variations on Shopify, follow these steps:
- Access your Shopify admin panel: Log in to your Shopify account using your credentials.
- Select the product: Go to the "Products" tab in the left-hand menu, then click on the product for which you want to add variants.
- Add options: On the product details page, scroll down to the "Variants" section. Click "Add variant."
-
Define options: Choose options for your variants, such as size, color, or style. Here are some examples of options:
- Option 1: size (e.g., Small, Medium, Large)
- Option 2: color (e.g., Red, Green, Blue)
- Assign prices and SKUs: For each variant, you can set a unique price, an SKU (Stock Keeping Unit), and adjust other specific information such as weight or stock.
- Save your changes: Once you have entered all the necessary information for your variants, click "Save" at the top right of the page.
Imagine you own an online clothing store and want to sell a T-shirt that comes in multiple sizes and colors. You would follow the steps above to add variants for this T-shirt. You start by creating the base product, then add size options (Small, Medium, Large) and color options (White, Black, Red). This way, customers can select the exact version of the T-shirt they desire. You could also adjust the price for each variant if, for example, the production cost differs between sizes.
A merchant who also created a Shopify agency shared his experience on a Shopify forum (source: Shopify Community). He sells custom shoes and has added variants for each shoe model based on size and leather type. He found this feature particularly useful as it allows for better inventory management and provides a better shopping experience for his customers. Ultimately, this led to increased sales and reduced product returns.
