Managing an international Shopify store comes with its share of tax implications. Here are the main ones to consider:

  1. VAT and other consumption taxes:
    • For the European Union, the seller must collect and pay VAT according to the rates applicable in their customers' countries.
    • In other regions, such as Canada and Australia, specific taxes on sold products must also be managed (e.g., GST and QST for Quebec).
  2. Import and customs duties:
    • It is crucial to inquire about import duties in each country where you ship products. For example, some countries may impose fees on customers upon receipt of their packages.
    • You must inform your customers of these potential additional costs to avoid any unpleasant surprises upon receipt of their orders.
  3. Local tax declarations:
    • Each country has its own rules regarding tax declarations. It may be necessary to register with the tax authorities of countries where you generate significant revenue.
    • For example, in Germany, it is often mandatory for an international seller to register with local tax authorities once a certain sales threshold is reached.

A concrete example of these tax implications is that of a US-based seller operating a Shopify agency with an international customer base. When he started shipping products to Europe, he had to comply with the VAT rules of each European country. This included collecting VAT at the corresponding rates, filing quarterly tax returns with the tax authorities of several countries, and adapting his accounting system to manage these complexities. Consequently, he had to hire an accountant specializing in international taxation to manage these tasks and avoid any risk of fines or penalties for non-compliance.
