To optimize images on Shopify, follow these steps to ensure fast loading times and an excellent user experience.

  1. Compress images: reduce image file sizes without sacrificing quality. Use online tools like TinyPNG or JPEG-Optimizer.
  2. Choose the right format: use JPEG for photos and images with many colors, and PNG for images with solid color areas or transparencies.
  3. Use adequate dimensions: resize images to the maximum necessary size to avoid unnecessary resizing by the browser.
  4. Use ALT tags: add descriptive ALT tags to each image to improve SEO and accessibility.

Here is an overview of image formats:

  • JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group): best for photos and rich-color images.
  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics): ideal for graphics, logos, and images with transparencies.

For example, Arthur, the owner of a Shopify agency selling sports equipment, had slow loading issues on his website. By compressing his product images using TinyPNG, he noticed a 40% reduction in image file size. Then, he resized each image to 1200x1200 pixels, which is the optimal size for his Shopify theme. As a result, his product page loading time was cut in half, which not only improved user experience but also increased his store's conversion rate.
