In brief

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) complements Shopify's data to help you understand where your visitors come from and how they behave before buying. Connected to your store, it collects e-commerce events (product view, add to cart, checkout start, purchase) and enables funnel exploration. Two points to keep in mind: GA4 and Shopify never report exactly the same numbers, for good reasons, and since 2024 Consent Mode v2 determines what GA4 is allowed to measure. Finally, the best dashboard is not the most comprehensive one, but the one that matches your maturity. This page guides you from setup to the reports that matter, and warns you about the trap that distorts decisions the most: double attribution of sales.

Measuring is good; making decisions based on your measurements is better. GA4 is a powerful tool, but it is often poorly configured and misread, to the point of leading to bad budget decisions. Here is how to connect it properly to Shopify, understand its numbers, and above all track only what moves you forward.

Our approach: the right dashboard depends on the brand's maturity, not on a trend. For many brands, Shopify's native reports are enough, especially as they are improving fast, with finer attribution and even tracking of traffic coming from AI tools. GA4 comes in when you want to dig deeper into acquisition. But keep one rule in mind: Shopify remains the source of truth for your revenue, and GA4 is for understanding traffic. And above all, beware of double attribution of sales, which distorts your acquisition cost and ruins your budget decisions.

Connect GA4 and track the right events

The connection goes through Shopify's native Google channel (the Google & YouTube app), which links your GA4 property to the store. Once in place, GA4 automatically collects the key events of the purchase journey:

  • view_item: a product page view.
  • add_to_cart: an add to cart.
  • begin_checkout: entry into the checkout funnel.
  • purchase: a completed purchase, with the amount and products.

These events feed GA4's funnel exploration, which reconstructs the journey step by step and shows where you lose traffic by source, device or segment. It is the natural complement to our guide on conversion funnel analysis: GA4 provides the raw material, interpretation does the rest.

Why GA4 and Shopify don't report the same numbers

It is the question that comes up with every installation: why does GA4 show fewer sales than Shopify? Rest assured, this is normal. The two tools do not count the same thing in the same way.

Cause of the gap Explanation
Different attribution GA4 ties the sale to a marketing session, while Shopify records every actual order
Consent and blockers A cookie refusal or an ad blocker prevents GA4 from measuring, while Shopify still sees the order
Cross-device journeys GA4 may split a journey between mobile and desktop, while Shopify only sees the final order
Bots and sessions Bot filtering and the definition of a session differ from one tool to the other
Time zone A time zone offset shifts sales from one day to the next

The practical conclusion: for revenue, Shopify is the reference. GA4 is for understanding traffic and acquisition, not for recounting your sales. Trying to make the two match to the cent is a waste of time.

Since 2024, Google's Consent Mode v2 has been essential for any store that reaches the European Economic Area and uses Google's advertising tools. It passes each visitor's consent status to GA4 and Google Ads, and adjusts measurement accordingly.

On Shopify, this relies on the Customer Privacy API and a compliant consent banner, either native or through a dedicated app. In practice: a visitor who declines has their measurement restricted, which explains part of the gap with Shopify. A poorly connected banner is a common trap: either it blocks everything and empties GA4, or it does not respect the refusal. Always check that consent is properly linked to your tags.

The right dashboard for your maturity

There is no universal dashboard. Depending on the brand's level of maturity, we recommend the one that delivers the most clarity at the best cost.

Maturity Recommended dashboard
Getting started Shopify's native reports, which are increasingly comprehensive, with refined attribution and tracking of traffic from AI tools
Intermediate A mix of Shopify and GA4, to cross-reference the truth of sales with a view of acquisition
Advanced Polar Analytics, which brings Meta, Klaviyo, Shopify and GA4 together in one place: ideal, but it comes at a cost
Custom Custom reporting driven by an AI connected directly to your data (for example Claude, via the MCP protocol)

Whatever the tool, the same metrics drive decisions. The ones we track first: conversion rate, traffic breakdown (organic and paid), customer lifetime value (LTV), average order value, the products that sell, those that don't and those that sell together, customer acquisition cost (CAC), ROAS, revenue and gross margin. To connect these numbers to actual visitor behavior, cross-reference them with heatmaps.

The double attribution trap

Here is the costliest mistake, and the hardest to fix: double attribution of sales. When the same order is credited to two channels at once, your acquisition cost becomes wrong, and all your budget decisions along with it.

The problem gets worse when the decision time is long. For a piece of furniture or a bed, a customer may take several weeks to decide, well beyond the platforms' 30-day attribution window. At Cabania, our cabin bed brand, we postponed setting up affiliate marketing for this reason: until you know how to split a sale precisely between channels, adding an attribution source only piles up duplicates and muddies your CAC.

The rule we apply: an imperfect but consistent attribution is better than a pile of tools all counting the same sales. Before adding a measured channel, ask yourself how it fits with the others. If you want a clean measurement setup, from the right dashboard to attribution that holds up, that is what our e-commerce services cover, as part of our guide to CRO on Shopify.

Once it is in place, GA4 automatically collects the key e-commerce events (product view, add to cart, begin checkout, purchase), which then feed the funnel exploration. Check afterwards that the purchase event fires only once per order.
