In brief

Personalizing to convert means adapting the experience to each customer: the right product highlighted, the right follow-up after purchase, the right answer at the right moment. Be careful not to confuse two topics: personalizing the experience, which is what this page covers, and customizing the store through development, which is a different job. Our approach is simple: start with Shopify's native tools, free and no-code (Search & Discovery, customer segments), then add apps or custom builds only when the experience to be gained justifies it. This page details the native tools, our four levels of personalization with client examples, the GDPR side, and how to choose between native, app and custom.

Shopify conversion rate optimization: example of personalized content boosting sales.

Personalization is one of the most powerful conversion levers, and one of the most misused. Too many stores stack up gadgets in the name of looking modern, when the real issue lies elsewhere: showing each visitor what matters to them, at the moment it helps them decide. Here is how we go about it, from the simplest to the most advanced.

First, a point of vocabulary: personalizing the customer experience is not the same as customizing the store with code; they are two different jobs. Here, we are talking about the first. In practice, we personalize at four levels: post-purchase emails based on the product bought (at Cabania, our own brand, customers receive the instructions and assembly video for their specific bed), product configurators that let customers design their own made-to-measure product (like the gates of Le Portail Français), AI agents in customer service, and up-sell and cross-sell mechanics in the cart. The rule: personalize where the decision is made, not everywhere just to look modern.

Personalize the experience, not the store

Let's start by clearing up a common confusion. Personalizing the experience means adapting what customers see and receive: recommendations, content, emails, offers. Customizing the store means developing custom features in the theme, technical work that falls under development. This page covers the first topic, the one that directly improves conversion without necessarily touching the code.

Why does it convert? Because a customer who is shown the relevant product, or followed up with at the right moment, moves faster toward a decision. It is the natural extension of our work on the customer journey: reducing friction, in this case by anticipating needs.

Native tools, to activate first

Before any paid app, Shopify already offers what you need to personalize effectively, for free and without code. Two tools form the foundation:

  • Shopify Search & Discovery: the free official app that handles product recommendations, filters, search results and merchandising. It is a store's first personalization lever, and often underused.
  • Native customer segments: in the admin, you group your customers by behavior (first purchase, loyal customers, high cart value) to send them tailored offers and emails.

For product recommendations, three formats cover the essentials: complementary products on the product page, recently viewed items, and a category's best sellers. Properly configured, they increase average order value without weighing down the page. For most stores, this native foundation is enough to personalize the essentials. We only move to the next step when the need becomes real and measurable.

Our four levels of personalization

In our projects, personalization plays out at four key moments of the journey. Here is where we act, and with what.

Level What we personalize Concrete example
Product page The product itself, designed by the customer Made-to-measure configurators (dimensions, colors, options), like the gates of Le Portail Français
Cart The complementary products offered Contextual up-sell and cross-sell, built in systematically
Post-purchase The email received based on the product bought At Cabania, the instructions and assembly video for the bed ordered, via Klaviyo flows
Customer service The answer provided in real time AI agents built into support, available around the clock

These four levels reinforce each other. Post-purchase email flows belong to relationship marketing, which we cover in detail in our Klaviyo guide. AI agents in customer service are becoming a real lever for conversion and reassurance, a topic we explore in our article on AI chatbots for customer service. The GDPR side, non-negotiable

Personalizing means using data, and therefore complying with the GDPR. The rule is simple: no personalization without consent for anything involving behavioral tracking, and no more data than necessary.

  • Collect clear consent through a compliant banner, and respect refusals.
  • Limit yourself to the data useful for the experience, with no indiscriminate collection.
  • Favor personalization based on actual purchase actions (already consented to within the commercial relationship) over intrusive tracking.

The good news: a large share of truly useful personalization, such as post-purchase emails or recommendations based on order history, relies on data that customers legitimately entrust to you when they buy.

Native, app or custom: how to choose

The question is not how much you can do, but what is right. Our approach, from the lightest to the most demanding:

Tooling level When to choose it
Native (Search & Discovery, segments) To get started, for free: covers recommendations, search and basic targeting
Specialized app (recommendations, up-sell) When volume justifies finer, automated personalization
Custom (configurator, AI agent) When the personalized experience becomes a central selling point for the brand

The logic stays the same at every step: we only add complexity when it brings in more than it costs. If you want to build personalization that truly serves conversion, without an overengineered setup, that is what our e-commerce support covers, as part of our guide to CRO on Shopify.

Foire aux questions

Start with Shopify's native tools, free and code free: Shopify Search & Discovery handles product recommendations, filters and merchandising, and native customer segments let you target by purchase behaviour. For most stores, that foundation covers the essentials of personalisation. You only add a paid app when your volume and the level of detail you need justify it.
