In brief

A Shopify expert is a service provider, independent or part of a team, specializing in the creation, redesign, migration, and optimization of Shopify stores. Be careful, however: the title is not a guarantee of quality. Shopify Academy badges are multiplying, and anyone can open a Shopify Partner account in a few clicks, which creates the illusion of expertise. What really matters is the track record: concrete achievements, verifiable code, and direct client feedback. This page explains the tasks entrusted to an expert, benchmark prices in 2026, how they compare to a freelancer or an agency, and where to find a reliable one.

The word "expert" circulates a lot in the Shopify ecosystem, often incorrectly. Before entrusting your store to someone, you need to understand what this status truly covers, what an expert can do, what it costs, and most importantly, how to distinguish true competence from a simple badge. This is the purpose of this page. For a step-by-step selection method, please refer to our dedicated guide below.

Experts Shopify

Our straightforward position: the label does not make the expert. Shopify Academy multiplies qualification badges, and anyone can create a Shopify Partner account in a few clicks, which gives a false illusion of expertise. We are contacted every day by self-proclaimed experts. At Stellar, only one thing matters: the track record. Achievable projects that can be visited, a GitHub that proves the quality of the code, and client feedback gathered directly, never stars on a directory.

Who is a Shopify expert?

A Shopify expert is a professional who masters one or more e-commerce professions applied to the platform: development, design, theme integration, CRO, acquisition. This can be an independent professional, a collective, or an agency. The important point to know: there is no official exam or rigorous qualification process to call oneself a Shopify expert. Shopify Partner status is obtained freely, and Shopify Academy badges validate knowledge, not delivered projects.

Concretely, this means that the title serves as a first filter, not a guarantee. A good expert is recognized by their proofs, not by their profile in a directory. This is why we emphasize three signals that are difficult to fake: a portfolio of truly live stores, viewable code, and reachable clients. To place the expert's role within the entire platform, our complete guide to succeeding on Shopify sets the scene.

What tasks can you entrust to them?

A Shopify expert intervenes on a wide variety of needs, from one-off tasks to complete projects. Here are the most common tasks and what they cover.

Mission What it covers
Audit and consulting Store and performance analysis, prioritization of workstreams
Store creation Design, theme integration, setup, and launch
Redesign Overhaul of an existing store, new theme, content recovery
Migration Transition from another platform to Shopify without losing SEO
Custom development Specific functionalities, Liquid customization, private applications
CRO and performance Conversion rate optimization, speed, and user experience
Acquisition SEO, Meta and Google advertising, email marketing with Klaviyo
Maintenance Monitoring, fixes, evolutions, and long-term support

A rare profile covers two or three of these areas well, never all of them at a high level. This is precisely what distinguishes a specialized freelancer from a multidisciplinary team, a point we will return to below.

How to brief them effectively?

Before even comparing profiles, prepare a clear brief. The more precise your request, the fairer the quote and the smoother the mission will be. Gather these elements before the first exchange:

  • Your quantitative objectives: target revenue, conversion rate, launch date.
  • The exact scope: creation, redesign, migration, or a specific feature.
  • Your budget and deadlines, even if approximate, as they guide decisions.
  • Existing elements: current platform, theme, installed applications, available access.
  • Two or three stores you like, to define the desired style.

A solid brief saves time for both parties and quickly reveals serious service providers: those who rephrase and challenge your request, rather than simply agreeing to everything.

How much does a Shopify expert cost in 2026?

The price depends on the profile, seniority, and format of the mission (daily rate or fixed price). Here are indicative reference ranges for 2026, for the French market.

Profile Indicative range 2026 Suitable for
Freelancer €250 to €600/day One-off tasks, tight budgets
Confirmed expert €400 to €900/day Specific expertise on a defined project
Agency Fixed project price, starting from a few thousand euros Complete project, with guarantees and team

What varies the cost: technical complexity, level of customization, deadlines, and the expected level of guarantee. A very low price often hides a lack of experience or subcontracting, and ends up costing more later in corrections. For details on agency budgets, see our page how much does an agency cost.

Expert, freelancer, or agency?

These three options are not equivalent depending on your project. A freelancer is the most flexible and least expensive per day, but everything relies on one person. An agency is more expensive but provides a team, contractual guarantees, and continuity. Here's the structural comparison.

Criterion Freelancer Expert or collective Agency
Cost Lowest daily rate Intermediate Higher, fixed price
Guarantees Weak, single person Variable Contract, continuity, follow-up
Deadlines Tied to a single availability Variable Absorbed by the team
Ideal for A one-off task Specific expertise A complete and long-term project

The most common risk we see: an ambitious project entrusted to a single individual who drops out midway, and a store that needs to be rebuilt from scratch. To decide based on your specific case, our freelancer or agency comparison details the decision-making process.

Shopify Plus expert, a separate profile?

Yes, clearly. Shopify Plus, the offering for high-volume brands, unlocks features that a standard account does not have: advanced checkout customization via Shopify Functions, native B2B, automations, multi-store management. These projects require a more senior profile, comfortable with code as well as with volume, security, and reliability issues.

In other words, an excellent expert on a standard store is not automatically the right profile for a Plus project. Verify that the service provider has already delivered in this specific environment, with screenshots and references to support it. To understand what this offer truly changes, consult our Shopify Plus guide.

Where to find a reliable expert?

The landscape has changed. The old Shopify Experts Marketplace has closed and been replaced by the Shopify Partner Directory, the official directory of partners. This is a good starting point, but remember that being listed there does not prove quality: the referencing is open. The main avenues today:

  • The Shopify Partner Directory, to identify referenced profiles.
  • Freelance platforms like Malt or Comet, for specific assignments.
  • LinkedIn and word-of-mouth, where the best profiles share their achievements.
  • Agency showcase websites, displaying portfolios, methods, and references.

Whatever the lead, apply the same reflex: ask for live realizations, code if the project is technical, and speak directly to one or two clients. This is the only filter that withstands self-proclaimed experts. For the complete selection method, criteria, questions to ask, and pitfalls to avoid, follow our guide how to choose a Shopify expert. And if you prefer to entrust the subject to a team that already applies these requirements, discover our e-commerce support.

Foire aux questions

In 2026, as a rough guide, expect 250 to 600 € per day for a freelancer, 400 to 900 € per day for an experienced expert, and a fixed project fee for an agency (starting at a few thousand euros depending on scope). The price mostly depends on technical complexity, level of customization, and the guarantees expected.
